Challenge

Versatile, a family-owned manufacturer established in 1986, faced significant operational inefficiencies due to reliance on paper-based documentation and scattered spreadsheets. These manual processes caused challenges in scheduling, inventory management, quoting and maintaining accurate cost controls. As the company expanded its offerings for high-profile clients in a fast-paced market, the need for real-time visibility, integrated workflows and data-driven decision-making became critical to remain competitive and support continued growth.

Results

Implementing Global Shop Solutions ERP enabled Versatile Wood Solutions to automate core manufacturing processes, resulting in 100% inventory accuracy, full integration of direct labor tracking and a reduction in purchasing staff requirements to just one employee. Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) provided robust capacity planning, while automated materials requirement planning (MRP) and purchasing workflows improved efficiency and reduced errors. The company now benefits from faster, more accurate quoting, precise job costing and the ability to make informed, data-driven business decisions - empowering them to secure new contracts and strengthen their position in the market.

About Versatile

Versatile is a family-owned manufacturer founded in 1986, specializing in high-quality architectural millwork, custom office furniture, store fixtures and displays. Serving prominent brands like Knoll and Herman Miller, they provide turnkey solutions from design to delivery.

The Challenge

Versatile's reliance on paper records and spreadsheets for managing operations created bottlenecks in workflow scheduling, inventory tracking and job costing. This fragmented approach hindered their ability to respond quickly to customer demands, created risks for errors and made it difficult to compete in a market where accuracy and speed are essential. Corrine Willis, Vice President of Sales, reflects, "Before Global Shop Solutions, our business management system consisted mostly of papers stored in file cabinets and various spreadsheets. In order to keep up with today’s rapidly evolving markets, we needed more control over our entire operations."

The Solution

To address these operational challenges, Versatile evaluated their options and selected Global Shop Solutions ERP for its comprehensive, integrated approach tailored to the needs of manufacturers. The decision was influenced by the system’s robust capacity planning, inventory management and automation features. Leveraging modules such as Advanced Planning & Scheduling (APS) and materials requirement planning (MRP), the company gained real-time visibility and control over the entire production workflow. Mark Schroeder, President, shares, "APS gives us a much better feel for capacity planning and helps to allocate our people and resources more efficiently, allowing us to compete more effectively." Chris Haskins, Production Manager, adds, "With Global Shop Solutions, the MRP feature automatically tells us what we need and when we need it. Then the auto purchasing does the ordering for us. As long as we do what we need to do in terms of properly issuing and scrapping material, our inventory is amazingly accurate." The transition enabled Versatile to automate critical processes, reduce manual errors and integrate labor tracking directly into business operations.

The Results

With Global Shop Solutions ERP fully implemented, Versatile achieved transformative results. Inventory accuracy reached nearly 100% and the company now requires just one staff member to manage purchasing - freeing up resources for other critical functions. The integration of direct labor tracking has improved job cost accuracy and enabled transparent employee bonus structures. Corrine Willis notes, "Tracking direct labor and factoring it into the employee bonus structure has really improved our accuracy in tracking true job costs. In the past, our costing was mostly guesswork based on estimated labor time and materials. Now we know whether a job is profitable or not and to a large degree we know why." These advancements have empowered Versatile to make informed business decisions, deliver quotes with greater speed and precision and secure new projects with confidence, positioning them as a leader in custom manufacturing solutions.
