Challenge

Tackpoint faced persistent operational inefficiencies due to an improperly configured ERP system. The lack of accurate system setup, combined with manual workarounds and insufficient management engagement, resulted in frequent scheduling conflicts, unchecked inventory write-offs and escalating production costs. These challenges hindered Tackpoint's ability to maintain cost control, meet delivery deadlines and sustain profitable operations in the competitive oil and gas bearings market.

Results

Following the successful re-implementation of Global Shop Solutions ERP software, Tackpoint achieved measurable operational improvements. Eliminating manual spreadsheets and optimizing scheduling led to reduced inventory scrap from 20% to below 5%. Enhanced inventory controls and purchasing practices drove a more than 200% reduction in distress inventory and a major decrease in inventory write-offs. The company also reached a 98% on-time delivery rate, strengthened job costing accuracy and received positive customer feedback for their improved service levels.

About Tackpoint

Tackpoint, based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, produces custom engineered bearing systems for the oil and gas industry. Their bearings are used primarily in downhole drilling and are shipped across North America, the UK, Norway, the Middle East and Singapore.

The Challenge

Tackpoint encountered significant obstacles in managing production and inventory. Their initial ERP system implementation was not tailored to their workflow, resulting in poor adoption, manual data entry and fragmented processes. With inadequate scheduling, high scrap rates and frequent inventory write-offs, Tackpoint struggled to control costs and deliver on customer expectations. These systemic inefficiencies threatened operational stability and profitability.

The Solution

Recognizing the need for a comprehensive transformation, Tackpoint’s leadership committed to a full re-implementation of Global Shop Solutions ERP. According to CEO Robert Friesen: “We needed to do several things. Make the system more user friendly. Set it up properly so it could perform the functions we needed. And make a commitment to using it to monitor and control costs, which we weren’t doing in the past.” Tackpoint evaluated their existing processes, eliminated manual spreadsheets and leveraged advanced planning, scheduling and inventory management features of Global Shop Solutions. The new setup provided real-time visibility, integrated data flows and robust controls across operations.

The Results

Tackpoint’s renewed approach produced substantial improvements across key performance metrics. Inventory scrap rates dropped from 20% to under 5% and distress inventory was reduced by over 200%. Inventory write-offs saw a major decrease, reflecting tighter controls and smarter procurement. Job costing became significantly more accurate, enabling better financial oversight. Most notably, Tackpoint achieved a 98% on-time delivery rate, earning direct praise from customers. CEO Robert Friesen shared, “We recently received an ‘attaboy’ from a customer for delivering at 98% on-time. It’s always nice to get one of those from customers.” These results highlight how Global Shop Solutions ERP enabled Tackpoint to elevate its manufacturing operations, deliver greater value to customers and set the stage for continued growth in the oil and gas sector.
