About Pressform Engineering

Pressform Engineering, based in Bassendean, Western Australia, has provided expert metal fabrication services for industrial, mining, oil, gas, building, architectural, chemical and water supply infrastructure since 1976. They specialize in CNC machining, punching, pressing, bending, rolling, robot welding, laser and plasma cutting and work with a variety of metals.

The Challenge

Pressform Engineering built a reputation for delivering high-quality metal fabrication services across multiple sectors. However, as the company expanded its CNC machining, punching, pressing, bending, rolling, robot welding and cutting operations, it became increasingly difficult to control costs and maintain transparency across core processes. Existing methods struggled to provide accurate job costing, effective inventory management and real-time monitoring of labor and production performance, making it challenging to identify and capitalize on repeat work that would drive profitability. As a result, the management team recognized the need for a robust, integrated solution to address these complex manufacturing requirements.

The Solution

Pressform Engineering evaluated its business needs and identified Global Shop Solutions ERP as the comprehensive platform to support its growth and operational goals. The decision was influenced by the system's ability to deliver real-time data insights, automate purchasing and provide detailed tracking of labor and production activities. According to Jonathon Worner, Group Manager, "Global Shop Solutions measures all cost inputs for a job by collecting labor and production data when employees clock in and out of jobs, sequences and machines. This enables us to accurately track both direct and indirect costs, which helps provide a reliable assessment of the value created within a costed job." The ERP's inventory management and automated purchasing features empowered buyers to work more efficiently, review historical work orders, compare vendor quotes and automate materials procurement. Estimator Richard Dolan noted, "We can cut purchasing costs by reviewing historical work orders to see who is more efficient at certain processing operations and viewing multiple vendor quotes on materials. Buyers can work more efficiently by setting up automated purchasing based on material requirements, planning functions and purchase history." Workshop Manager Mark Egan added, "I know which jobs are being completed in the allocated time and which aren’t because Global Shop Solutions monitors it by capturing employee time. I use many different screens to see what’s happening on the shop floor, but the two I use the most are Open Work Orders and Work in Progress to monitor labor and cost from WIP to finished goods." The implementation process engaged staff at all levels, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

The Results

The adoption of Global Shop Solutions ERP delivered immediate and sustained benefits for Pressform Engineering. Accurate measurement of both direct and indirect labor costs improved financial oversight and job profitability. Procurement became more efficient, purchasing expenses were reduced and inventory was maintained at optimal levels. The company achieved a gross profit percentage above 42%. Real-time data tracking enabled proactive management of jobs and increased shop floor morale. The company now benefits from faster, more accurate quoting, on-time deliveries and a motivated workforce, positioning Pressform Engineering for future growth and continued success.
