P&S Machining and Fabrication ERP Case Study
Industry
Metal Fabrication
Challenge
P&S Machining and Fabrication faced operational inefficiencies due to reliance on handwritten job tickets, punch timecards and manual inventory records. Rapid business growth in the late 1980s exposed the limitations of these manual systems, resulting in delayed access to accurate cost data, incomplete visibility into shop floor activities and challenges in tying labor and materials to specific jobs. These obstacles hindered their ability to maintain accurate cost analysis, timely reporting and effective decision-making as the business scaled.
Results
With Global Shop Solutions ERP software, P&S Machining and Fabrication eliminated manual documentation, digitized data entry and gained comprehensive real-time visibility across operations. The ERP system enabled automated job tracking, accurate cost analysis and improved inventory management, as evidenced by a $50,000 inventory increase through digital tracking. Enhanced monthly profitability analysis and seamless customer communications became possible, while responsive customer support and ongoing software enhancements empowered continuous improvement and operational transparency.

About P&S Machining and Fabrication
P&S Machining and Fabrication is a family-owned business in Burlington, North Carolina, operating since 1965. They provide precision CNC machining and sheet metal fabrication services to industries such as aerospace, defense, biotech, power transmission and more. The company is AS9100C and ISO 9001:2008 certified and operates out of a 50,000-square-foot facility. The Challenge
P&S Machining and Fabrication managed complex manufacturing operations using handwritten job tickets, punch timecards and manual inventory logs. As the business expanded rapidly in the late 1980s, these methods led to growing inefficiencies, delayed access to critical job cost data and difficulties connecting labor and material expenses to specific projects. These challenges limited operational visibility, hindered accurate profitability analysis and made timely reporting increasingly difficult, threatening the company’s ability to scale successfully.
The Solution
To address these limitations, P&S Machining and Fabrication sought an integrated ERP software solution capable of automating manufacturing processes and delivering real-time insights. After evaluating options, they selected Global Shop Solutions for its comprehensive capabilities and adaptability to their manufacturing environment. According to Mike Scoggins, President and General Manager: “Global Shop Solutions made a huge difference right off the bat simply by tying all that information together and making it automatic through the system. It allowed us to speed up virtually every process by eliminating our handwritten documentation. And for the first time, we had real visibility into what was happening on the shop floor.” The software’s flexibility enabled them to customize workcenters and screens, achieving a tailored fit for their workflow. Seamless customer support was another decisive factor: “Plus, they consistently offer great service and support. When we call in with a problem, we don’t get an answering machine saying ‘please hold, your call #50 in line,’ and we don’t wait three months to get an answer. Most of the time we can WebX with a customer support rep and get an answer on the spot. If not, they work on it and quickly get back to us with a resolution. With Global Shop Solutions, we know we’ll get the support we need, when we need it.”
The Results
Following implementation, P&S Machining and Fabrication achieved significant improvements in operational efficiency and data visibility. Manual paperwork was eliminated and data entry was automated, enabling real-time job tracking and accurate cost analysis. Inventory control improved markedly, as highlighted by a $50,000 inventory increase through digital tracking and labeling. Monthly profitability analysis became more precise, supporting better management decisions. The ERP system also enhanced customer communications; as Mike Scoggins shared, “When a prospective customer walks in our door, the first thing we talk about isn’t our high-tech machines or the hundreds of thousand of dollars we spend on ISO, AS and quality equipment. It’s Global Shop Solutions. We take them over to a machine, pick up the job router and say, ‘This is what we do on labor performance. This shows us the cost of operations from materials to heat-treating to plating to machining.’” With more than 50 years in business, a facility spanning 50,000 square feet, and customer relationships lasting over 25 years, P&S Machining and Fabrication leveraged Global Shop Solutions ERP software to deliver transparency, robust cost controls and ongoing operational excellence.
