Challenge

Midland, with over 80 years in operation and 100+ employees, encountered operational challenges due to the complexity of managing custom fabrication jobs, diverse payroll requirements for hourly and piece-rate staff and running multiple disconnected software systems for accounting, production and purchasing. Manual data entry and the absence of real-time information created inefficiencies, hampered communication between departments and made it difficult to maintain cost control and meet demanding on-time delivery standards.

Results

With Global Shop Solutions ERP, Midland unified its business processes, automated piece-rate payroll and gained real-time visibility into jobs and inventory. The integrated platform facilitated faster, more accurate scheduling, improved cost tracking and empowered teams to make data-driven decisions. As a result, Midland maintained its exceptionally high on-time delivery rate, optimized resource allocation and strengthened its reputation for quality and customer service.

About Midland Metal Products

Midland is a fourth-generation, family-owned fabricator specializing in sheet metal, wire and tubing for point-of-purchase displays. With 100+ employees and a 100,000-square-foot facility in Chicago, Midland serves the retail, architectural and gaming industries with custom design, engineering and prototype services. Midland is currently on track to earn its ISO:9001 certification.

The Challenge

Midland faced increasing complexity as it managed a growing volume of custom jobs for industries such as retail, architecture and gaming. Operating from a 100,000 sq ft facility with over 100 employees, Midland relied on separate systems for accounting, purchasing and production. Manual data entry and lack of real-time job tracking led to inefficiencies, communication gaps and difficulties in managing both hourly and piece-rate payrolls. These challenges threatened cost accuracy, operational efficiency and the company’s ability to consistently deliver projects on time.

The Solution

To address these operational hurdles, Midland sought a fully integrated ERP platform capable of consolidating core business functions and providing real-time data access. After evaluating their options, Midland selected Global Shop Solutions ERP for its comprehensive suite of manufacturing-focused modules, robust data integration capabilities and proven track record in the industry. According to Jamie Brezinski, Director of IT, "With Global Shop Solutions, everything is integrated into one well-functioning system. Because everyone has access to the same data, it enables our sales team and project management team to provide our customers with the most up-to-date information about the status of their orders." The transition enabled Midland to automate payroll for piece-rate workers and to pull up live data to inform real-time decisions on the shop floor. "With Global Shop Solutions, we simply select the box to indicate that someone is a piece-rate employee and the system automatically calculates their pay based on their production. We no longer have to manually track how many pieces our workers make, and it greatly simplifies our payroll process." As Brezinski notes, "With Global Shop Solutions, we can pull up data while the job is running and make decisions in real time that affect the outcome of the job."

The Results

Implementing Global Shop Solutions ERP allowed Midland to unify its business systems, automate time-consuming manual processes and provide teams with real-time visibility across all operations. The ERP platform enabled more accurate scheduling, improved inventory management and enhanced cost tracking. This digital transformation freed up valuable time for staff to focus on high-impact tasks: "When you remove those kinds of manual processes, it frees up huge blocks of time for people to improve the business because they’re getting things done more efficiently and accurately. With Global Shop Solutions, we have more time to spend on the high-level parts of our jobs that really bring value to the customer and to the business." With over 100 employees and a 100,000 sq ft facility, Midland continues to deliver custom fabrication solutions with an exceptionally high on-time delivery rate, maintaining its leadership in quality and service after more than 80 years in business.
