Global Shop Solutions is blessing the homeless one bag at a time. With a long history of supporting their community, Global Shop Solutions has participated in the Humble Area Assistance Ministries (HAAM) Blessing Bag for the Homeless, a project designed to provide the area’s homeless with individual personal hygiene kits.

As part of its annual team building week, Global Shop Solutions’ consulting team spent an afternoon gathering personal hygiene items from donors and assembling 200 kits to give to homeless individuals. Each kit contained more than a dozen items, including towels, soap, shaving gear, body lotion and more. Donated items came from a number of sources, including Global Shop Solutions, the Courtyard Marriot, and Modern Dentistry.

“Our company has a rich history of community service,” says Casey Moes, consulting team leader for Global Shop Solutions, “and each year our consulting team includes a service project as part of our team building week. Last year we assembled and donated 10 bicycles and helmets to Children’s Safe Harbor. This year we chose to support the Blessing Bag for the Homeless. It’s a great way to give back to the community while enhancing our team building efforts.”

Making it Interesting

To make the project more fun, and inject a bit of friendly competition into the activities, Moes turned the process of gathering the donated items into an electronic scavenger hunt. He broke the team of 50 consultants into seven groups, each with its own rental van and a designated driver and “texter.”

Moes texted a clue to each of the groups, who then had to decipher the location of each donor and see who could get there first. The first group to arrive on site to pick up the donated items won bragging rights for that round. Once all donations were gathered, the entire team gathered at a central location to assemble the 200 kits.

“The team loved the scavenger hunt,” says Moes. “I tried to make the clues a bit cryptic so that people really had to think to figure them out. And the first van to arrive at each donor wasted no time in making sure everyone else knew it.”

A Legacy of Service

For more than 40 years, Global Shop Solutions has engaged in ongoing efforts to support local service projects. Recent charities and service projects company personnel have participated in include Toys for Tots, Sunshine Spaces, feeding and taking care of the homeless in Montgomery County, and In the Pink, a charity benefit to support cancer survivors.

“Global Shop Solutions’ owners, the Alexander family, have huge hearts,” adds Moes, “and are committed to blessing the lives of others around them. Dick Alexander, Founder and Chairman of the Board, and now his son, Dusty Alexander, CEO & President, lead the way by creating an atmosphere of caring and sharing of our time and resources. It’s a lot of fun to work in a company that values service opportunities and allows us to participate.”
