Furniture Manufacturing Expands in Virginia

The furniture manufacturing industry in Virginia just got a boost from Vanguard Furniture. Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced that the furniture company is investing $550,000 into a facility in Carroll County that will produce its signature quality upholstery materials. An estimated 200 new jobs will emerge from this development.

During the announcement, Andy Bray, Vanguard Furniture’s president, remarked on the growth of his business in the past few years. Their current manufacturing takes place in five different buildings in North Carolina, but the need for an expansion to a strong manufacturing community brought them to Carroll County.

The Carroll News announced that work will begin in August of this year in a 116,000 square foot building near the county’s industrial park.

A recent interview on NPR with journalist Beth Macy illustrated why furniture manufacturing is so important to the U.S. economy. Macy’s newest book, “Factory Man: How One Furniture Maker Battled Offshoring, Stayed Local, and Helped Save an American Town,” discusses the journey of a family-owned furniture business that fought against foreign competitors and worked hard to accommodate employee and customer needs to hold its position in the industry.

Today, furniture manufacturers understand this same principle. Investing in skilled workers, reducing materials wasted and delivering to clients on time means productivity and profitability. ERP software systems can make this all possible.
